The Ugly Duckling Makes a Beautiful Ornament

Even when you like a picture of something, it is easy to be blown away by how it looks in person.  That’s exactly what has happened to me with The Ugly Duckling ornament that Disney released as part of their Storybook Classics Collection.

This ornament is based on their 1939 Silly Symphony version of the story (not to be confused with their very different 1931 take on the story).  Not that the story is original to Disney.  I’d long heard the story of the duckling who discovered why he was so different – he’s really a swan.

This ornament captures the moment when the young swan is embraced by his new mother.  Ok, so her wings aren’t actually touching him, but they are about to.  He is looking up, and the joy on his face is wonderful.  The mother swan is looking down with such love.

And if the ornament stopped there, I’d like it.  But the other details make it absolutely perfect.  Both of the swans are sitting in a translucent blue plastic with water ripples carved into it.  I can just imagine how wonderful it will look when it captures lights on a Christmas tree.  There’s a water flower in the foreground, and behind them are some cattails.  And those cattails?  They are flocked for a nice touch.  The results of all of this is truly beautiful.

The water gives this ornament the sold base it needs, so you can set it out to enjoy year round.  I’m actually trying to figure out where I can display it – I love it that much.

There is a light blue ribbon coming out of the mother swan’s back you can use to hang the ornament of your Christmas tree.  Yes, once again, you’ll find that the ornament is perfect because it hangs straight.

This ornament truly is a treasure that DisNerds will cherish.  If you like The Ugly Duckling at all, you need to track down this ornament.  It’s a work of art.

Disney has highlighted some of other rarer pieces in other entries in the Storybook Classics Collection.

Original Price: $19.95
