Book Review: Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book

Dr. Seuss is known for his wonderfully creative easy reader books, but he is equally good at creating creatures out of his imagination.  And that's what he mostly does in Dr Seuss's Sleep Book.

It starts with a yawn, but soon all around the world, people are settling in for the night.  But no, these aren't the normal people you'd expect.  We're talking about Seuss creations like the Biffer-Baum Bird.  There are the world champ sleep talkers and the various sleep walkers.  And you can't forget about the Chippendale Mupp who sets his alarm by biting his incredibly long tail.

With Biffer-Baum birds and Chippendale Mupp's, it's obvious this isn't an easy reader.  It is still written in a wonderful rhyming pattern that makes it easy to read.  I read this to my niece at bedtime on a recent trip home, and I'll admit that a few of the creatures tripped me up a bit.  But I slowed down a second and figured them out no problem.  The rhythm of the book really helps with that.

Of course, some of the pages are difficult on purpose.  Thank you tongue twisters.  The worst page covers moose dreaming of goose juice and goose dreaming of moose juice.  Yeah, that's a hard one.  But it's also very fun.

And Dr. Seuss illustrated the book, which means they are wonderful.  They use minimal color, but they have great detail thanks to his pen drawing.  Plus who better to create these wild and crazy creatures than the man who dreamed them up?  You'll want to spend some time looking at the pictures because they definitely add to the fun of the book.

There's no real story to it, just a wandering account of various creatures going to sleep.  But it's fun, and that's all that matters, right?
