Ornament Review: Sulley, Mike, and Boo - 2001 Hallmark Ornament

It’s no secret that my favorite Pixar film remains Monsters, Inc.  The main reason why I love it is the relationship that grows between Boo, the incredibly cute human child, and the monsters Mike Wazowski and Sulley as they try to get her home.  That is perfectly captures in the Hallmark ornament Sulley, Mike, and Boo, which came out in 2001, the year the film was released.

No, the ornament doesn’t capture a moment from the film.  However, it is easy to imagine this moment happening after the film has ended.  It features Mike standing in Boo’s room which Sulley peeking out from behind the door to her closet.  Boo herself is standing in the foreground with her arms raised.  All three are smiling and obviously thrilled to see each other again.

One thing that amazes me is that all the characters feel like they are correctly proportioned.  That is achieved by hiding most of Sulley behind the door.  It looks for all the world like the rest of his is back there and if you turn the ornament around, you’ll see more of him.  Alas, when you actually turn the ornament around, you’ll see that it’s just the flat back of the ornament.  Even with most of Sulley not there, it still takes a rather large ornament to hold all three of them.  The base of the ornament, made to look like the floor in Boo’s room, is a couple inches square, so it definitely takes up a little room on your tree.

And yes, Hallmark paid attention to detail.  The door is indeed Boo’s closet door from the movie.

My only real complaint is the way the characters are positioned.  It’s very hard to put it on the tree so that you can see all three of their faces.  Usually, Boo winds up with her back to the room so we can see Mike and Sulley.  It’s a shame since the expression of joy on her face is so cute.

The big base of the ornament means it sits flat.  The hook for hanging the ornament is on Sulley, and the ornament is balanced for placement there since it hangs straight.

Even though this ornament doesn’t reconstruct a specific scene from the movie, just seeing those characters together makes me smile.  Any fan of Monsters, Inc. will want to add Sulley, Mike, and Boo to their Christmas tree.
