Ornament Review: Tasty Tannenbaum - Christmas Cupcakes #6 - 2015 Hallmark Ornament

Stars: 4 out of 5
Pros: Creative and fun idea
Cons: Execution doesn’t live up to idea
The Bottom Line:
Tree out of frosting
Pictures better than product
So disappointing

Great Idea but Doesn’t Quite Come Together

You know how sometimes there is a great idea what just doesn’t happen in real life like you think it will?  I think that’s the case with Tasty Tannenbaum.  This entry in the Christmas Cupcake series has the potential to be great, but it doesn’t quite pull it off.

As the name of the ornament suggests, this is designed to be a Christmas tree made out of frosting.  The foil at the bottom is red, and the cupcake peeking out is white.  On top of that is some white frosting topped by a tower of green frosting.  It tappers off at the top, and the waves in it make it look more like frosting.  Stuck in this green frosting are red hearts, and at the very top is a red star.  All these red decorations match the red foil at the base of the tree, I mean bottom of the cupcake.

As with the rest of the ornaments in this series, the ornament is made out of fabric.  And I think that’s where the problem lies.  In the pictures Hallmark provided of this ornament, everything looks nice and the tree is straight.  Sadly, the reality is less than perfect.  The green frosting is slightly lopsided on the cupcake base and so the tree tips slightly to one side.  I have a feeling that this tree is too tall and doesn’t have the support it really needs to stand up.  Considering it is wrapped in tissue paper in the box, that will probably only get worse as the ornament ages.  And no, it isn’t just mine.  I looked at several, and they were all the same as were the samples in the stores I’ve been in.  Ironically, the price of the series went up three dollars this year, too.  It’s not as bad as it could be, but it is a noticeable flaw and the ornament suffers as a result.

On the other hand, this is a realistic look.  I have a feeling that if someone tried to make a cupcake with that much frosting in real life, it would tip a little.  Heck, if I tried it, it would tip a lot.

Of course, the nice flat base means you can display this anywhere you want.  I think I’m going to start setting mine out as part of a food themed display.  You’ll also find the series marker, a 6 in a Christmas tree, on the bottom.

If you do want to hang it, you’ll find the loop on the top of the star.  Slip a hook through it, and you’ll find it hangs straight.

It’s not that this ornament is truly bad, but it is disappointing after looking at the pictures.  You’ll want to double check your Tasty Tannenbaum to make sure it isn’t sagging.

Be sure to check out the rest of the Christmas Cupcakes series.
