September 1st's Book Beginnings and Friday 56

Welcome to September and this week's Book Beginnings and Friday 56.

This week, I'm highlighting A Christmas Peril by J. A. Hennrikus.


                                                        

This is the first in a new series featuring a former cop who is now working in a theater.  I actually just finished it about an hour ago, and I really enjoyed it.  Watch for my review as part of a blog tour next Thursday.

But for now, how about a couple of teasers.
Here's how the book opens.

"You could kill him without getting caught, couldn't you, Sully?"  I assumed Dimitri was referring to Patrick King, Scrooge in our production of A Christmas Carol.  I'd considered killing Patrick myself, but purely for stress relief.  The considering part, that is.  Some people do yoga.  I try to plan the perfect crime, and then I figure out what would trip me up.  A cop may retire, but she never really leaves the job.

Since I read an eARC, I'm jumping a head of 56% in the book.  It's not an exciting passage out of context, but it actually speaks to motives and is very interesting in context.  But I did find this to tease you with.

An idea that had been swirling around my brain began to take some shape.  But before I could nurture it further, I had to deal with some ghosts.
