July 8th's Friday Post

Welcome to Friday!  Considering it's been a short week, it has felt so incredibly long.  But let's kick off the weekend a little early with a Friday post.  I'll be participating in:

Book Beginnings
First Line Friday
Friday 56
Book Blogger Hop

This week, my teasers will be coming from Poison Pen by Sheila Lowe.

This is the first in a series featuring Claudia Rose, a forensic handwriting expert, and set in the Los Angeles area.  It's definitely darker than the cozies I would normally read, but I enjoyed it.  Here's how the book starts:

From the crest of the manicured hillside, she could hear them yelling out to the endless procession of limos - the paparazzi and fans milling outside the cemetery gates.

Jumping ahead to page 56, we find this Claudia on phone with Kelly, her best friend.  This quote starts with Claudia speaking:

"Please tell me this is the whole story.  That you just turned around and left."
"Well, I had to leave.  It was all so humiliating."
"I have a sinking feeling there's more," Claudia said.
Silence, then the sounds of her drink being refilled.
"Kelly?"
"Yeah, there's more.  I went back later..."

And what happened when Kelly went back later?  I'll leave that for you to find out.  My review will be up on Thursday, so I hope you'll come back and read it.

Let's close things out with the Book Blogger Hop.  This week's question is:

How many books do you buy per month?

While I've been listing my books acquired for my weekly Sunday/Monday posts, I've discovered that I seem to acquire at least 12 books a month.  No wonder I was drowning in books in my condo and never seem to catch up on my TBR pile.  However, I'd say half to a third of those are ARCs I'm getting for free.  So maybe 6-8 books actually bought a month?  I think I need to slow down a little until I get some of these books read.

Have a great weekend.

  2. That is a great sounding book.

I am having to look at alternative book storage! Most of my books these days are Blog Tour books, but I then ask for books for Mother's Day, my birthday and Christmas...

    Have a great weekend!

  5. My first line comes from a fabulous book by Pepper Basham, The Heart Of The Mountains:
    Chapter 1. October, 1919
“Running away from an arranged marriage to the wilds of the Blue Ridge hadn’t gone as Cora Taylor expected.”

  6. I can't seem to get my comment to show my name. Something up with gmail I think/guess. Anyway, I think I'd like working in forensics and uncovering mysteries in real life. My quotes this week come from several books which I reviewed together. I hope you will forgive me for not following the "rules" this week.

  7. I was drowning in books until last time I moved. I dramatically downsized at that time, and generally don't regret it. I just don't have the space!

  8. Poison Pen sounds right up my alley!

I keep intending to not buy any more books until I clear some off my Kindle and shelves. But I keep finding more that I want to read!

    My book beginning is here.

  13. Happy Friday!
I'm currently reading Free Fall by Nancy Mehl, so I'll share a line from there.
"Alex couldn't help thinking about the missing woman at lunch. Where was she?"
I hope you have a good weekend. 😀

  14. People who love to read definitely seem to collect more books than we can ever read. Yes, it's overwhelming, but we (I) still can't stop! :-)

  16. I loved the first few books in this series but it's been far too long since I've read it! I definitely need to start it back up - especially since I own a number of the books. I'm trying to cut back on the number of books I bring in too. Sometimes it goes better than other times.
