“I Drank the Map.”
My binging of Only Murders in the Building was twofold. Mostly, I enjoy the show and wanted to get caught up. But, since season 5 was currently unspooling each week, getting caught up meant I could enjoy the fifth season in real time. And enjoy, I did.
This season picks up exactly where season four ended. Oliver, Charles, and Mable (Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez) have just found the dead body of their beloved doorman in the building’s courtyard fountain. To their surprise, their investigation quickly brings them back to the woman who wanted their help with her husband’s disappearance. The discovery of a second body, a finger, and a secret in their building only complicate things. As the stakes get raised, can the trio solve their latest case?
Let’s get my usual disclaimer out of the way early, shall we? This show is filled with foul language and other content meant for adults. It is rated TV-MA for a reason. As long as you take that into account, you’ll be fine.
One thing I realized as I was watching this season is how much stronger the mysteries have gotten. Gone are the days of us flitting from one suspect to another in each episode so they didn’t have to pay the guest stars for an entire season. True, the guest stars aren’t in every episode, but they weave in and out of the season enough to be a strong presence throughout.
And we had a good mystery here. I wasn’t sure where things were going until they reached the end. And the questions that I had in my mind going into the finale were all answered.
The show is just as over the top and funny in the best way possible. The one liners were great. The show gets more meta as it goes along. It stopped just short of being too clever for its own good, at least for my tastes. I laughed multiple times as I watched each episode.
Which means the actors continue to do their jobs perfectly. The main trio are fantastic as always, and I enjoyed getting to see the supporting players from the building as always. The new characters, and the actors portraying them, fit perfectly into the fabric of the season.
I also love seeing how the relationship between the three leads has grown. We can feel the love their characters have for each other.
Which brings me to the head scratcher from the final episode. The characters talk at one point how it’s been five years since they met. Maybe it was just supposed to be a meta moment, but I can’t see how that’s the case. Yes, we know it was a year between seasons 2 and 3, but all the others went right into the next murder. Even given that they take a few months to solve each case, I don’t see how it adds up to five years.
Speaking of time jumps, we do get three months before the dead body drops for our teaser for season six. I got a good laugh out of that scene and am looking forward to seeing where that story goes.
Fans who are still enjoying Only Murders in the Building will be delighted with season five. It’s got the laughs and twists we’ve come to expect. Now comes the long wait for season six.
