June 5th's Book Beginnings and Friday 56

Isn't it wonderful that it's Friday again already?  I'm jazzed about that, especially since I get to run the Camp Pendleton Mud Run tomorrow.  If only it were a little warmer right now in Southern California.  (I know I won't be saying that in another couple of months, but for now, it's true.)

What does that have to do with Book Beginnings and Friday 56 for the week?  Absolutely nothing!  So let's get to it.

The book this week is Farmed and Dangerous by Edith Maxwell.

This is the third in her local foods mystery series.  And it begins like this:

Cameron Flaherty sidestepped in surprise as a tall man with gleaming skin the color of dark-roasted coffee beans stormed into the institutional kitchen at Moran Manor Assisted Living, his deep brown eyes flashing.

And skipping ahead to 56% into this e-ARC (I'm only 30% of the way into it myself):

The car kept coming.  She tried to push herself up but slipped again.  She waved her arms in front of her.  Surely the driver would see her.  Surely he would stop.

And now I'm anxious to watch up to that point in the book and find out what is happening there.

  1. It's not a series I'm familiar with but I think I need to be!

  3. These are both exciting quotes, we don't get that too often. Enjoy your mud run, have you done one before?

    1. Yeah, I certainly can't complain about the quote.

This is my sixth year doing the Camp Pendleton Mud Run, and I do other mud runs throughout the year as well.

    1. There are only three books in the series so far, so you aren't too far behind - yet. If you're like me, you'll find yourself several more books behind before you realize it.

  5. I hope that guy does see her. That first guy seems awfully angry.

    1. I don't know (yet), but I'm suspecting the guy might be aiming for her. I'll find out soonish.

  6. I love the description here of what the tall man looks like and the action taking place; I can visualize it right away!

Good luck in the Mud Run. We just moved from CA to D.C. and am missing the west coast.

    1. Hope you learn to love DC, although I know I would miss CA too much if I moved.

    1. The cover reminds me of Christmas as well. The book is set in winter, but not at Christmas.

    1. I had no idea what I'd find when I turned to that section of the book, and I was thrilled to find that excerpt. Still can't wait to find out what is really happening.

  9. I hope he stops and I'm wondering what she's doing in the road, alone. This looks like a fun series!

    1. I will say this, the "she" in the 56 is the main character of the series, so I'm sure that gives you so clue whether he stopped or not.
