Last year, Hallmark started a series of ornaments based on
the classic Christmas song "The Twelve Days of Christmas." It's hardly a surprise that the second entry
in the series is Two Turtle Doves.
This is the only ornament in the series that is going to
feature more than one of the item from the song (or at least that's what
sculptor Edyth Kegrize says now). The
two doves are resting their heads together and arching their bodies in
different directions, which means that their tail feathers stick out on
different sides.
The ornaments in this series aren't quite realistic but have
a decoupage artsy feel to them. Frankly,
that means it takes me a little while to warm up to each one, but once I do, I
love it. In this case, the birds have
purple heads and tails with a peachish pink body in the middle. They have two sets of wings each. The bottom layer is purple while the top
layer has some musical notes on it. Both
birds have some gold squiggles on them.
The first bird has "Two Turtles Doves" written on it in
calligraphy, while the back bird has their verse from the song written on
it. Part of the verse is covered by the
back wing, but I believe that is a design feature.
Then there's the dangle.
Hanging from the first in front is a gold heart with "Two 2"
written on it, again in calligraphy.
As you can see, it's not exactly your traditional ornament,
but I've actually come to like it for that reason. It's really pretty, and the various elements
make it stand out from the rest of my ornament collection. Honestly, I can't wait to get all twelve days
of this series.
There is no base or stand to this ornament, so it doesn't
stand up at all. Not only that, but the
dangle also makes it hard to display any way but by hanging. The back bird has the brass ring to use to
hang the ornament, and you'll find that this ornament hangs straight, at least
to my eye.
Yes, this is an official series from Hallmark, and that
means there is a 2 in a Christmas tree hidden on the ornament. I won't deprive you of the joy of finding it,
but it was in the first place I looked.
This particular ornament has some interesting history behind
it. While originally to be released in
July, it was recalled at the last minute because of production problems. Those seem to have been fixed, and the
correct version is now appearing in stores.
I actually saw one of the July ornaments before it was released, and I
saw nothing wrong with it. It was
gorgeous then, and it is gorgeous now that I finally have one.
This take on the "Twelve Days of Christmas" isn't
going to be for everyone. But if you are
looking for something a little different and very beautiful, you'll like this
take on Two Turtle Doves.
