TV Recap: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 1-4 - Eye-Spy

When you have a friend who wants to stop by and hang out, you skip your TV shows to do that.  Which explains why I am just getting my recap done.

I know some people raved about this week’s episode.  I didn’t see the big deal.  In fact, it might be my least favorite so far.  But maybe my expectations were just too high.

The episode starts with a diamond theft.  There were a bunch of different men carrying briefcases – only one of which had the diamonds in it.  And yet somehow, someone still stole them.

Using surveillance, they find their suspect, and she happens to be a former SHIELD agent, in fact, Coulson trained her himself.  Everyone thought she was dead after an accident.

We land on the ground and start trying to track her.  Skye and the scientists stay in the van while Coulson and Grant head out to find her.  Only she finds the van first and rams it a couple of times.

Before she does that, the scientists and Skye are able to find a feed they determine is coming from her eye.  It’s a rather well done scene as they realize they are being watched.  Then later, they figure out it’s her eye.

Melinda May, the pilot, isn’t impressed with their efforts to bring in their suspect quietly.  So she figures out where the suspect is stay and goes to confront her.  That’s when the suspect reveals she is being monitored at all times, and one of them is going to die.  Fortunately, Coulson has also figured out where the suspect is and tranquilizes her before one of the ladies has to kill the other.

They manage to turn off the feed and give it to Grant.  With Skye assisting him, they work to fulfill the suspects current mission.  Why?  They’ve learned that there is a kill chip in the suspect’s head and until they get it out, they have to make whoever is watching believe that Suspect is still on mission.

They get the kill chip out (it’s attached to the robotic eye she has) just as the mission is starting to go south anyway.  And they backtrack the field to her handler, who is former MI-6.  He drops head when he sees Coulson meaning he was also being controlled.

The scientists are still the least developed characters on the show, although they did get a little more time in the episode.  Maybe it’s because I’ve watched Nikita, but I just felt like the storyline overall wasn’t that original or clever.  It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as amazing as I’d heard.

However, since we don’t know who was really behind all of this, I’m sure we’ll be revisiting it at some point.  They are starting to open quite a few plot threads.  It will be interesting to see who or what sticks as the season goes forward.
