November 2nd's Book Beginnings and Friday 56

Here we are again, time for Book Beginnings and Friday 56.

This week, I'm highlighting City of Lies, the first in the new Counterfeit Lady series by Victoria Thompson.

I'm almost half way through this book, and I'm really enjoying it.  While Victoria Thompson writes a traditional historical mystery series, this isn't as much of a mystery.  There is crime, and it's just a lot of fun.
Anyway, here's now the book begins:

Jake looked much too smug.
Elizabeth's hand itched to smack the smirk off his face, but well-bred ladies didn't go around smacking people in hotel dining rooms.

A bit longer beginning, so I'm going to keep the 56 short and sweet:

"My mother was one of the ladies arrested yesterday."

I will have a full review and a giveaway up on Thursday, so I hope you'll come back then and enter.

  1. HI Mark!

It's a beautiful looking book, and I have to admit how surprised I was with your teasers. Sounds really good. Not what I expected.
