May 6th's Book Beginning and Friday 56

Well, we've made it through Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you) and Cinco de Mayo, so that must mean it is time for Book Beginning and Friday 56.

This week, I'm featuring a book I just finished at lunch time, Sayonara Slam by Naomi Hirahara.

This book features Mas Arai, a survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and an almost retired gardener in Southern CA.  And yes, this book does feature baseball.  In fact, here's how the book begins.

At first, Mas Arai thought it was a bat boy playing some kind of prank.

Moving ahead to page 56 (okay, pages 54-55), we find this:

Yuki gave a slip of a smile and tapped on his phone again.  "Let's see what Akemi tells us."
"That's what I decided to call my phone.  So my grandmother is still close to me."
Mas grimaced.  He had heard of mama's boys, but a grandma's boy?  That was carrying it too far.

Look for the review on Tuesday.  Have a great weekend.  Me?  I'm hoping to get over this cold.

  1. I haven't read this one yet. I look forward to your review. Please take a look at mine!

  2. This sounds good. I like any connection to baseball. I'm spotlighting Heart of Brass by Kate Cross from my TBR mountain this week. Happy reading!

  3. I don't usually read sports-themed books, but this one sounds intriguing. Don't think I could live with a cell phone named after a relative. But that's just me. Thanks for sharing, and I hope your cold gets better!

  4. Sounds cute. I like the idea of grandma's boy. :-) Happy weekend!

  5. Sounds like a good one. I had to go check, but she writes the Ellie Rush books too.

  6. This could be a good one. I like the name he chose for his phone. Never feel foolish for using a loved ones name.

  7. This is a new to me book and author - hope you feel better soon.
    Here's my Friday meme

  8. I'm not much of a sports person, but otherwise I'm really intrigued by this.

Check out my Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings).
