Book Beginnings
First Line Friday
Friday 56
Book Blogger Hop
For the first three, I'll be featuring teasers from A Peculiar Combination by Ashley Weaver.
I've been hearing about this series for a while, but I finally got a chance to read it, and I really enjoyed it. It features a safecracker who is blackmailed into helping the British government in World War II. And here's how it begins:
We were going to get caught.
That certainly jumps right into it, doesn't it? And it pulled me right in.
By page 56, she's meeting with her contact and getting just a bit more information on her assignment. As she goes to leave, we get this exchange:
"Shall I have my driver take you home?"
I shook my head as I finished setting my hat atop it. "It's not far. Besides," I said, drawing the veil down over my face. "It's better to take precautions, isn't it?"
It was a fun book, and I'm definitely going to be looking for the sequels. My full review will be up on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, let's get to this week's Book Blogger Hop. The question is:
Do you prefer to read standalone or series books?
I think it's rather obvious that I prefer series. Just about everything I read is in a series. I love returning to characters that I've gotten to know. The longer a series runs, the more those characters feel like old friends.
That wraps things up here. Have a wonderful weekend.
Love those snippets! That sounds like a book I'd enjoy. And I appreciate a good series, but I can read a stand-alone, too.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
Sounds like an interesting read! Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it, it does sound interesting. I enjoy series as well, but sometimes it's nice to read a standalone book as well. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good book. I always used to read series but since participating in blog tours I tend to read stand alone books.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
