It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

I actually had something different happen this week.  I went in for jury duty.  Now, this wasn't going in to my local courthouse.  This was Federal jury duty, which meant I had to go to downtown LA, which was about an hour and a half drive for me at commute time.  I was out of bed and on the road Tuesday morning before I'm used to getting out of bed these days.  (Have I mentioned how much I love working from home recently?)  I was called as one of the first twelve they put in the jury box, too.  After several hours there, during the interviewing the jury portion of the day, I was dismissed.  I was so happy because I had so much to do at work.  And I got dismissed in time to miss the worst of the traffic coming home, too.

Since that was just one day, I obviously worked the rest of the week.  Finally tackling some of the new stuff I was handed in August from start to finish.  It took me quite a while to do it.  Not fun, but I got it done.  Now to finish up the other stuff I need to do this coming week because another month end is starting on Friday.  Can you believe it is time for that already?

And I went out paddle boarding this morning.  Had to do it early because it is getting windy this afternoon and evening.  Cooler than it has been and cloudy, but the sun and the clouds were beautiful.

It's been a while, but I've been getting some new music again, which means I will have some music reviews coming soon (including this week).  I've gotten Still from Steven Curtis Chapman and Always Only Jesus by MercyMe recently, and I've been enjoying both of them.  I've got the new releases from Selah coming this next week, and I can't wait to start listening to them as well.

That was my week, so shall we get to it?

Book Haul:

I've got another large book haul to tell you about.

We'll start off with the physical book I got - The Counterfeit Wife by Mally Becker.  I read the first in this historical mystery series earlier this year, and I can't wait to dive in and see what happens next to the characters.  It is set during the American Revolution.

I also had an ebook I pre-ordered be released this week.  The Case of the Amorous Assailant is the first in a new series from Terry Ambrose, and it sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

My request on NetGalley for Secrets in the Stacks by Lynn Cahoon was approved this week, so I downloaded that as well.

Author Kim Hunt Harris came across my radar this week.  Her Trailer Park Princess series sound fun, and since the first, The Middle Finger of Fate, was free on Kindle, I just couldn't resist.

As you've probably noticed, I'm working on catching up on the books of Diane Vallere right now, so when she put The Kill of It All, the ninth in the Madison Night series, on sale for 99 cents, I snagged it immediately.  I won't get to it until a year from now at the pace I'm going, but at that price, it can hang out on my Kindle for a while.

And, Monday night, before I started jury duty, I downloaded the audio version of The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly from my local library.

What I'm Currently Reading:

There was one problem with getting an audio book.  It is a long one (14 hours) and I only had to drive down the one day.  That left me with 11 hours left in the book to finish it up.  I'd say it's a good thing that The Fifth Witness is a relisten for me, except it's been long enough I don't remember a thing about it.  I got to 60% while listening today driving to and from the lake, but I don't know when I will be able to finish it.  I listen in fits and starts since I work from home, but I will get there.

I'm also about to start A Book Club to Die For, the third Beloved Bookroom Mystery from Dorothy St. James.  I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, so I'm looking forward to diving in.

I believe that's it for me.  Hope you have a great week.

  1. I did Federal Jury duty a few years ago and had to drive down to LA from Santa Barbara. I wasn't ever put in the box, but spent all day there before they agreed on the jury. Super interesting but disturbing case. I watched the news to see what happened to the guy, too.

  2. That is a long commute. They never keep me. I think because I have family in law enforcement. Hope the week ahead is a good one.

  3. Jury Duty is not something we know here in SA, sorry you had to commute so far for it!

I was teaching the kids at school about tall tales this week, I will have to take a closer look at the book Tall Tales!

Have a good week ahead and happy reading!

  4. I didn't like jury duty and was glad when I could get out of it

  5. I feel like it's my responsibility to serve on a jury when I am asked. I've served on county courts and city courts, but I haven't ever been asked to federal court.

The paddle boarding sounds fun. I'm glad you got to go before you have to spend so much time at the end of the month finishing things up.

  6. I'm never sure if I'd want to do jury duty or not. Part of me thinks it would be incredibly interesting, but also really stressful and since when have I been mature or responsible enough to decide on someone's fate?

  7. I have not been called for federal jury duty, I didn't really realize it was a thing! Nice haul, and great music choices!! Have a great week!

  8. I've not done Jury Service. I don't like the thought of it. Glad that it all worked out for you though!

A great looking haul. 14 hours worth of audio book sounds long, but I've not done audio so I have nothing to compare it to!

    Have a great weekend!

  9. I had children aged under 12 months when I was tapped for jury duty so I was excused and haven’t been called back up again yet.
Maybe you could listen to your audio book when you are doing tasks that take two hands like cooking to get through it.

Wishing you a great reading week

  10. Ooh, Jury Duty! I hope just saying the words doesn't jinx me, lol. I haven't gotten a summons in a while. Hoping they stay off my radar.

Enjoy your week and your books, which look good.

  11. I've never been called for jury duty and I hope I'm dismissed quickly if I ever am. That commute doesn't sound like any fun at all! Your book haul sounds fun. Hope you enjoy them and have a great week 😊

  12. Ahhh how I loved being called for Federal Jury Duty in Downtown, even though I never made it onto an actual jury. I was mad when they changed to the system where you just call in to see if you need to come down. I loved going there and sitting ALL DAY, reading and people watching, and listening to people complain about having to be there.

  13. I've never done jury duty. I was called once over 20 years ago, but my schedules conflict. I hope you had an enjoyable time.

  14. Sounds like a good week! I got called for grand jury duty this summer, but was not selected, which was disappointing. Grand Jury Duty is only like 1 or 2 days a month for 6 months. Oh well, maybe I'll get a chance another time. Hope you have a good week!

  15. I've been wanting to try Diana Vallere's books. She has an SF series that looks good to me.

  16. I've been on a jury a couple times. Not particularly exciting, but I also don't try to avoid them. Looks like your book stacks are growing. :) I've read quite a bit of Michael Connelly and Fifth Witness is one of my faves. I get what you mean about not finding enough time to listen. I also only listen when I drive, so it's hard to finish in a timely way sometimes. Hope you have a great week. Thanks for stopping by!

  17. Sorry to hear about the commute! I haven't been called for jury duty yet but I'm sure it'll happen sometime soon/in the future.
Take care and have a wonderful week!

  18. You're the third person I've heard mention they were called for jury duty in the last week. How weird is that? I was called during "covid" but wasn't needed so I didn't have to drive into my city (they sent texts). Those commutes can be killer so I'm glad you at least were excused at a good time to drive home. Have a good week!

  19. I've never been called for jury duty. I was once in the pool for it but there wasn't a case in the small, rural county where I lived during my term. Of course, now having said that, I'll probably be called tomorrow. Sounds like work is keeping you busy too. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  20. I've been called for just duty twice and was lucky to not be chosen both times as they were both brutal murder cases. Happy reading this week.

  21. Jury duty, great you were dismissed and it all worked out. I listen to audio in fits and starts and it always works out. Podcasts suck me in too.

  22. You got further in jury duty than I ever did. All but one time I've been summoned, I was told the day of not to come in. The one time I did get called in, I was dismissed after about 30 minutes. I think being on a jury would be interesting, but I can't say that I wasn't relieved not to be selected! 23. Whew on getting dismissed! I've never been called for jury duty but my husband ended up on a massive land dispute case and was a walking expert on property law for a bit. I'm about to start Secrets in the Stacks and am looking forward to it. I really enjoyed the first book. Have a wonderful week.

  24. I never want to have to drive in LA again. (Last time was 12 years ago and it was too crowded then.)
I was called for local jury duty this morning... not that they will ever let an attorney serve. They dismissed the jury pool though.

Your music haul sounds good and your book haul looks good. I found that Trailer Park Princess first book in my Kindle Library.
I hope you have a good week and Happy Reading! MarthaE.

  25. That's a really long drive for jury duty, I love driving though so I wouldn't have minded because I listen to audiobooks when I drive. I love Steven Curtis Chapman and MercyMe. I Can Only Imagine is my favorite from MM, makes me tear up every time.

  26. I never had to do jury duty, although I've been called up for it, but I am curious about the experience. Maybe one day I can experience it at a convenient time.
