Reading Challenge: Finishing the Series 2023

I know I participated in a finishing the series reading challenge at some point in the past, but it has been years.  Since I'm signing up for a ton of reading challenges this year, I decided it was time to do something like that again, so I'm signing up for Finishing the Series as hosted by Celebrity Readers.

Yes, it really is as simple as it sounds.  You need to finish a series you've already started during 2023.  It doesn't matter if you have 20 books or 1 book left.

Naturally, there are levels.  I'm signing up for (gulp) the B List series finisher, which is 5-8 series.  Not books.  Series.  I'm going for eight series.  This is a lot of books I'm committing to up front, which scares me, but since most of these were already on my radar to finish this year, I think it won't be as much of a stretch as I'm making it feel like right now.

I'm not including any series where I was up to date on December 2022 and a new book is coming out this year.  If I did that, I could list a ton of series.  All of these books had at least one book (and sometimes only one) out in 2022 I hadn't read yet.

Unlike other challenges were I list the books as I read them, I'm going to list the books I am planning to read for this challenge now, and update with links as I go along.  I'll also list the book's place in the series.

Jan 4 Update: I keep adding series.  I might make it to the A List, but we will see if I get through all these series or not.  I'm planning to now, but things can always change.

Reading Challenge: Audiobook Challenge 2023

I plan to keep listening to audiobooks in 2023, so I'll be signing up for the Audiobook challenge again in 2023.  It's hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and That's What I'm Talking About.

Once again, I'll be going for the Stenographer level, which is 10-15 books.  My own sub-challenge is to listen to one a month.  I made it in 2022, so I'm hoping to do the same in 2023.

I'll post them below as I listen to them.

1. Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie
2. Bastille Vs. the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson
3. The Christie Caper by Carolyn Hart
4. "X" by Sue Grafton

13. "Y" is for Yesterday by Sue Grafton

Reading Challenge: European Reading Challenge 2023

I've long been a participate in Rose City Reader's Book Beginnings weekly meme.  And I've thought about signing up for the European Reading Challenge she hosts in the past, but I decided this is the year.

Obviously, the idea is to read books set in Europe.  The twist?  You can only count one book for each country.  This is what had tripped me up in the past since I know I will read several set in England, but I'm not sure about other European Countries.  So we'll see how I do this year with this one.

Having said that, I'm going to set my initial goal at the Two Star Adventurer level because I can think of at least two books coming up that will get me to two different countries.  We'll see if I wind up visiting any others along the way.

I'll list the books and countries below as I get them read.

1. Intrigue in Istanbul by Erica Ruth Neubauer (Turkey)
2. Murder on the Home Front by Jessica Ellicott (England)
3. Passport to Spy by Nancy Cole Silverman (Germany)
4. A Stolen Child by Sarah Stewart Taylor (Ireland)
5. Death on the Grand Canal by M. A. Monnin (Italy)
6. Mastering the Art of French Murder by Colleen Cambridge (France)

Reading Challenge: Southern Literature 2023

I'm going to jump into the Southern Literature Reading Challenge in 2023 as well.  Although I don't know that my cozy mysteries will be quite what everyone else is reading, but curious to see just how many books I wind up reading set in the south this year.  I can already think of several I will be reading.

This are no levels to the challenge.  Just read books and have fun.  I'll be listing the books I read that qualify below.

Feb. 2 Update - There are levels.  I think I'm going to start with Level 3, which is 5-6 books.  I think I'll actually make it to level 4 (7+ books), but let's see how the year plays out.

2. Wined and Died in New Orleans by Ellen Byron
3. Stuff Dreams are Made of by Don Bruns

12. Birder, She Wrote by Donna Andrews

Reading Challenge: Foodie Reads 2023

I will be continuing on with Foodie Reads in 2023.  This isn't a challenge per se since we don't have to pick any levels (and I LOVE that).  But it's a chance to highlight books that feature food, and since I love my culinary cozies, that's a good thing for me.

I'll list the books below as I read them.

1. Gone for Gouda by Korina Moss
2. Death by Smoothie by Laura Levine

Reading Challenge: Historical Fiction Reading Challenge 2023

I really enjoyed the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge in 2022, so I will definitely be back for 2023.  I will be catching up on Victoria Thompson's Gaslight series this year, but I have lots of other historical mysteries calling my name, including a couple I got for Christmas.

That's why I am going to sign up for the Medieval level again, which is 15 books.  I'm hoping I'll make it further, but since the next level is 25 books, I think that's a bit too much for me.

I'll list the books below as I read them.

1. Dead-Bang Fall by J. R. Sanders
2. Of Manners and Murder by Anastasia Hastings
3. Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie
4. Murder on Wall Street by Victoria Thompson

Reading Challenge: Calendar of Crime 2023

This challenge sounded like a lot of fun to me when I read about it.  Calendar of Crime is a challenge of mysteries (and you know how many of those I read), but each book much fit a certain category to qualify for the month.  Usually, I try to stay away from those, but there are so many different categories for each month, I think I will finish this one fairly easily.

Here are the categories for each month.  If this is hard to read, you can follow the link to see this at the original post.

You don't have to read the book in the month it is covering.  So I can read a January book in January or in August.

Since this is just twelve books, I'm sure I can find prompts for it fairly easily.  I will fill in each book and the prompt I used as I finish them.

January - Fatal Fascinator by Jenn McKinlay (release month)
February - Wined and Died in New Orleans by Ellen Byron (release month)
March - Irish Coffee Murder by Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis, and Barbara Ross (St. Pat Day)
April - Arbor Day Can be Deadly by Ryan Rivers (April holiday)
May - Murder at the Majestic Hotel by Clara McKenna (M in title)
June - The Clairvoyant Countess by Dorothy Gilman (author's birthday)
July - Of Manners and Murder by Anastasia Hastings (set in July)
August - It Takes Two to Mango by Carrie Doyle (Beach/resort on cover)
September - Silence is Golden by Penny Warner (S is title)
October - Gone for Gouda by Korina Moss (book set in October)
November - Mrs. Claus and the Trouble with Turkeys (Thanksgiving)
December - Passport to Spy by Nancy Cole Silverman (Christmas/December set)

Reading Challenge: Cloak and Dagger Challenge 2023

Of course, I'll be back for the Cloak and Dagger Reading Challenge again in 2023.  Carol at Carol's Notebook is hosting once again, and any mystery counts.  Naturally, I'll have mostly cozies, but I'll have a few non-cozies as well.  I'll be shooting for the Sherlock Holmes level again, which is 56+ books.

I'll list them below as I finish them.

Reading Challenge: Cruisin' Through the Cozies and Craving for Cozies Challenges 2023

I have no plans to switch up what I read in 2022, so I plan to stick with both the Cruisin' Through the Cozies and Craving for Cozies challenges again this year.  Two challenges, and two hosts, but both are designed to read as many cozy mystery as you want/can this year.

For Cruisin', I will once again be going for Sleuth Extraordinaire, which is the highest level at 40+ cozies.

Happy New Year 2023! (A Sunday/Monday Post)

Not only are we starting a new week, but we are starting a new year as well.  And, unlike most years, where I am kicking off the new year with reading challenges, I'm kicking off the new year with a Sunday/Monday post.

As usual, I'll be linking up to:

Sunday Post
Sunday Salon
Stacking the Shelves
Mailbox Monday
It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

When we last checked in, I was in northern California for Christmas.  I'm back home now.  I drove down Tuesday.  After saying that traffic wasn't usually an issue driving around Christmas, I got stuck in traffic for several hours.  Not anything like those stranded due to weather have faced, but it was still pretty frustrating.

Worked Wednesday through Friday, although we did get off a couple hours early on Friday, which was nice.

And I really need to get moving on writing reviews.  I haven't written any before Christmas, so I've got three books I need to review.  That isn't like me.  I'm going through Christmas time burnout.  I just don't want to do anything, which is usually a pretty good sign that I shouldn't do anything.

Of course, I'm also thinking about the year ahead and how I can ease up on my posting schedule a little.  I've posted something every day, sometimes more than one thing a day, for 10 years now without any real days off.  I need some down time.  Hopefully, I will figure out a way to do that this year.

Not that you'd know it from the reading challenges I signed up for this year.  I believe I signed up for 17.  Of course, I kept my commitments to them low.  Most of them are just things I will naturally do as I read this year anyway, but we'll see what happens with them.

So what reading challenges did I sign up for this year?  Here's the list:

Cruisin' Through the Cozies/Craving for Cozies (similar themes, so all the same books will count)
Cloak and Dagger
Calendar of Crime
Historical Fiction
Foodie Reads
Southern Literature
European
Audiobook
Finishing the Series
Mount TBR
Virtual Mount TBR
New Release
NetGalley and Edelweiss
52 Books in 52 Weeks
Reading by the Numbers
Coyer Chapter 1 (although I plan to sign up for the others as the year goes along)

As I said, that should keep me busy, although most of those will be easy for me to hit my goals.  All the posts for these will go live tomorrow.

About half of these are new to me, too.  The other half are the ones I did last year and I'm doing them again.

This Past Week on the Blog:

This Coming Week on the Blog:

Sunday - Happy New Year (You are here)
Monday - Reading Challenge Sign Up posts (multiple posts)
Tuesday - Fatal Fascinators by Jenn McKinlay
Wednesday and Beyond - That is a great question

Honestly, I don't have much planned beyond Tuesday yet.  And I need to write a couple of reviews, but I'm not sure which will be posted when.  Hopefully, I will at least get Gone for Gouda reviewed on Thursday.

Book Haul:

As expected, I got books for Christmas.

The one I didn't expect was Her Dying Day by Mindy Carlson.  It wasn't on my radar at all even though it's from a publisher I often read.  A friend got it for me.  She is friends with the author, which is cool.  It sounds good, too, so I'm very anxious to read it.

Yes, there are two non-fiction books in there.  I'm a fan of Matthew West's music, and I really love his song "The God Who Stays," so I was interested in reading the book.  Meanwhile, I thought Life on the Mississippi by Rinker Buck sounded like a lot of fun.

And I got two historical mysteries.  Both are set in England in the 1940's.  A Peculiar Combination by Ashley Weaver is set during World War II, and The Right Sort of Man by Allison Montclair is set after the war has ended.

And because those books weren't enough, I stopped by Barnes and Nobel while they were having their 50% off hardcovers sale.  I was looking for a couple of books, but the only one they had in stock was Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn.  I've been hearing lots of great things about it, so I'm looking forward to reading it.

What I'm Currently Reading:

As I type this, I've just barely started Aerobics Can Be Deadly by Ryan Rivers.  I've had a lazy Saturday, not doing most of what I planned today, including reading and writing reviews.  I had hoped I might get it read over Saturday and Sunday and been ready to start my next book, Oh Danny Girl by C. Michele Dorsey on Monday.  But we'll see if that winds up happening or not.

Once again, Happy 2023!  Hope you have a great start to the year this week.
