Stars: 3 out of 5
Pros: Amanda Bynes
Cons: The twists in the final third
The Bottom Line:
Story just okay
Amanda Bynes is funny
Not really must see
I Didn't Love It, but It's Not a Wreck
Jenny Taylor (Amanda Bynes) is a high school senior obsessed
with Jason Masters (Chris Carmack). She is convinced that if they could just
spend some time together, Jason would realize they are soul mates and the two
of them would fall in love. The catch? Jason is an internationally famous pop
star, so there's no way that a nobody like Jenny would ever get to met him.
Looking to earn money for college, Jenny gets a summer job
at a Caribbean resort with her best friend
Ryan (Jonathan Bennett). Unfortunately, her nemesis Alexis (Jamie-Lynn DiScala)
also shows up.
The trio hasn't been there long before Jason shows up for a
couple days off in the middle of his current tour. Naturally, Jenny is ecstatic
and does anything she can to catch his eye, including slip aboard the sunset
cruise that Jason is taking. When Jason accidentally falls overboard, Jenny
dives in and saves him. The two wind up stranded on an island. Jenny
immediately realizes this is her chance, and she intends to make the most of
it, going to any lengths necessary to win her man.
Okay, I'll fess up. I enjoy Amanda Bynes. So I decided to
give this made for TV movie a try. Amanda really shines here, and I'd say it's
a safe bet that the part was written for her. Her over the top antics and weird
facial expressions are hilarious and absolutely make the movie. I can't imagine
anyone else in the part.
That's not to say the rest of the cast is bad. Jamie-Lynn
DiScala gets to have some fun playing rival Alexis. Chris Carmack and Jonathan
Bennett are fine as the male leads, not that the script calls for too much from
then. And watch for Lance Bass and Kathy Griffin as part of Jason's entourage.
There is a pretty fun twist to the plot (that I'm not
revealing but the previews did) that makes the movie lots of fun. I laughed
multiple times at the events. The story is very lightweight, but I was really
enjoying it until the final third. Suddenly, the movie throws in a couple
things from left field that seem pretty out of place and don't really help the
movie. This just complicated the climax, which seems rushed. These flaws were
enough to make me lower the rating on the film.
At times, the special effects make it obvious this is a low
budget movie. When Jenny and Jason are lost at sea, the camera angles are
obviously making up for the lack of location. However, some other effects later
in the movie are better. They don't get in the way, but they don't wow you like
the bigger budget movies we are all used to seeing these days.
Ultimately, this is a light and fluffy way to waste a couple
hours. I recommend viewing Lovewrecked before you buy since it's probably not something
you'll want to watch more then once.
