Book Beginnings and Friday 56 for March 29th

This week's book is Princess Elizabeth's Spy: A Maggie Hope Mystery by Susan Elia MacNeal.  I'm about half way through the book and enjoying it very much.

Up first is Book Beginnings.  And the Prologue starts off with....

The midday summer sun in Lisbon was dazzling and harsh.  But while nearly everyone else was inside taking a siesta, the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII of England, kept up his British habits, even on the continent.

Chapter 1: Bletchley was a small, seemingly inconsequential railway town about fifty miles northwest of London.  However, since 1938, the town was also the home of what was officially knows as the Government Code and Cipher School.

And now for the Friday 56.

As Maggie ran downstairs to use the black telephone in the parlor, she tried to ignore the fact that her hands were cold and trembling.

I'm about half way through the book and really enjoying it.  Set during World War II, it includes some great fictional characters and brings them believably in contact with real people.  And the mystery element is very strong, too.

    1. There are a couple flaws with the book (mostly timing issues), but it is very well written overall, and I'm really enjoying it.

  2. Sounds like my kind of read! I just finished one of Jaqueline Winspear's books, and this sounds to be in the same genre. You may want to check out the Maisise Dobbs series!

Here's a link to that book:

    1. I've heard great things about the series, and at some point I really do need to read it. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. And yes, many people compare the two series favorably.
