Ornament Review: Mrs. Potts and Chip - 2010 Disney Store Ornament

Stars: 4 out of 5
Pros: Detail; fun pose
Cons: Size
The Bottom Line
Size really matters
And it's the only black mark
On this ornament

It's All About Size with the Mrs. Potts and Chip Ornament

This year, the Disney Store released three ornaments based on the characters from Beauty and the Beast.  Being such a huge fan of the film, naturally I snatched them right up.  The Mrs. Potts and Chip ornament is bigger than the others and just seems too big.

I'll admit, I was thrilled at first to get this ornament.  The detail is amazing.  As you may remember from the movie, Mrs. Potts is the housekeeper at the castle who was turned into a teapot by the magic spell.  She makes up the majority of the ornament.  She's smiling, causing her cheeks to bunch up.  Her eyes are wide open, however, and you can even see her eye lashes.

Next to her is her son Chip, a tea cup with a little chip in one side.  If you look closely, you can see that they filled in Chip completely.  It's not obvious since the top of the cup is attached to Mrs. Potts.  As a result, the chip that gives him his name is only a surface chip.  But I didn't even notice that until I started really looking at it, so obviously it's not that obvious.  And since the ornaments are feel like they are made from a light but fragile plaster, you definitely don't want to make it easy for them to break.

Most of the ornaments that the Disney Store released this year have red ribbon in them to hang the ornaments from.  This one has lavender, however.  Since Mrs. Potts and Chip are mostly grey and lavender, it fits quite nicely.  Red just wouldn't have worked in this case.  The ornament hangs straight from the ribbon, too.

Mrs. Potts is slightly leaning to one side, but they have built up the base so that the ornament still sits level.

But, as I mentioned in the first paragraph, the ornament just seems too big.  It's the width, not the height.  All three ornaments from this movie are about four inches tall, but the other two are about two and a half inches wide.  Mrs. Potts and Chip are more of a cube because they are also four inches wide.  Okay, I get that they couldn't do the ornaments to complete scale because Belle and Beast would have to be super big or the other two would be so small that you'd lose the detail.  Even giving them leeway for that, Mrs. Potts just seems huge.  I think if she'd been shrunk an inch in every direction, she wouldn't seem too huge and more in proportion to the others.

Yeah, the size does bother me, but I do like the ornament overall.  Mrs. Potts and Chip makes a good addition to any Disney lover's Christmas tree.
